By now I’m waiting for an absolutely shit SC400 to come his way.

Unfortunately even a “good” example of the F355 isn’t so good thanks to valve guides, timing belt and faulty exhaust manifolds.
I don’t foresee him affording it considering Doug admitted he can’t afford to maintain one, and Doug is worth some serious cheese.

Well, you can pick up bad SC400s for practically LeMons money now, so if he doesn’t, I just might.

Watching now. I believe you have to take the engine out to do some of the services. But this should be fun to watch.

Hoovie did net a TV deal. I think being able to responsibly afford it is the distinction to be made here, practically any person with a $55K+ MSRP car could afford it.
What is your pain tolerance...

Those problems are really overblown, like the 911 IMS issue. You replace the manifolds with Fabspeed headers and do the valve job once. Many of these cars have already been upgraded. The belt service is what it is, but you know it is coming so you can plan and save. The 355 has a few other finicky, expensive systems, but being able to read the forums and diagnose little things go a long way. Many owners DIY the belt service. A lift isn’t even required, but certainly helps. It’s not going to be Toyota Camry cheap, but upkeep is manageable with proper planning.

Solid point. Shoot hope it works out well!

Those are valid points. The valve guides themselves are known to be faulty, no?
Have heard good things about the fabspeed headers. One of the most beautiful and best sounding modern Ferrari models by far.

Makes for good reading! I do not have the financial stomach for it, barely surviving 12 year old BMW life.

Yeah, it’s the valve guides that causes the problem. They were originally made in bronze the first few years of production because that is what racing engines used at the time. The metallurgy is great for the application but unfortunately not durable. This is fine in an engine that is rebuilt all the time, less OK on a road car though. While the guides can be determined to be defective with a leak-down test, carbon build-up can also cause the symptoms of bad valve guides. So a lot of owners do the valves, when they only really needed an Italian tuneup. That being said, I’ve driven behind a car that needed new valve guides and it was very obvious by the amount of oil being burned (owner said 1 qt on our Sunday drive).
The 355 is definitely one of the best sounding v8's of all time, IMO.

But one thing I am not is, “as dumb as Tyler Hoover.”
